Step by Step instructions for optimizing your LinkedIn profile:

Update your profile picture:

Ensure that your profile picture is a close up shot.

Look directly into the camera.

Smile.

Have a neutral background.

Dress professionally.

Avoid wearing headwear, sunglasses, or excessive jewelry.

Update your background picture:

The standard LinkedIn background picture can be a bit boring, so consider updating it. Use Canva to create a personalized banner.

Use an image that relates to your job function and projects a professional image.

Optimize your headline:

Your headline should draw people in and make them want to learn more about you.

Consider using a format that includes your job title, company name, and important keywords.

Be sure to use keywords that will help people find you when searching for profiles on LinkedIn. A tip I got at one point was that if you’re aspiring to another job, put it in your title. I include “Aspiring Chief of Staff” to let companies know that I am pursuing it as my next career move.

Sample:

Experienced Administrative Professional with a Focus on Project Management and Calendar Coordination

Review and update your LinkedIn summary:

Your LinkedIn summary should provide a brief overview of your background, experience, and goals.
